On Pymetrics, the disagreement is real. MyConsultingCoach calls it a legacy test that turns up only sometimes, in office-specific or older processes. Hacking the Case Interview says it's still used in select offices, regions and programs, though no longer as the default. Neither names offices in a way we could check against BCG's own pages.
What BCG uses instead
BCG's careers pages describe different screens in different offices. The main ones:
- Casey, the Online Case Experience: a chatbot-led business case of about 30 to 35 minutes. BCG's US, Mexico and Australia and New Zealand pages describe an online case, and the Mexico page names Casey. See the Casey guide.
- The Consulting Career Assessment (CCA): an SHL test mixing behavioral questions with a short reasoning block, taken by every US Associate applicant, US and Canadian advanced degree applicants, and Associates in Mexico. See the CCA guide.

If your invitation names one of them
Follow the invitation. Offices change their process between cycles, careers pages can lag, and prep sites can be wrong in either direction. If the email names the Potential Test or Pymetrics, that's your test. If the format, timing or calculator rules aren't clear, ask the recruiting team before you start; it's a normal question.
What the Potential Test was
Prep sites describe the Potential Test as a timed, multiple-choice aptitude test built around business case material. Questions reportedly mixed math word problems, reading charts and tables, and reading comprehension. MyConsultingCoach reports two versions: an online one of about 23 questions in about 45 minutes, built around a single case whose documents appeared as you went, and a paper one of about 53 questions in about 50 minutes. Calculators were usually not allowed, and some sections reportedly took points off for wrong answers.
If you're genuinely invited to it, the closest preparation is timed numerical and data interpretation work without a calculator. The cognitive test guide covers mental arithmetic tactics that carry over. Read the scoring instructions for each section on the day, especially on whether guessing costs points.
What Pymetrics was
Pymetrics, as BCG used it, was a set of short online games: 12 games taking about 25 minutes in total, according to prep sites. The games reportedly measured traits such as attention, memory, risk-taking and fairness, and results were compared with a benchmark profile rather than marked right or wrong. Prep sites say Harver acquired Pymetrics in 2022 and that results were reused by other employers on the platform for around 330 days, with no retake in that window.
If you're invited, the reported advice is sensible and short: take it rested, in a quiet room, on a laptop with a working keyboard, read each game's instructions properly, and play naturally. Prep sites also warn that trying to fake a trait profile across a dozen games tends to produce inconsistent results.
Why old guides still mention them
Pages and forum threads written when these tests were in use keep ranking in search, and some prep sites haven't updated their process diagrams. One site's current CCA guide still lists Pymetrics among the next steps after the CCA. BCG's US page describes the online case with Casey as the next step for selected candidates. When a prep site and BCG's own page disagree, trust BCG's page, and trust your invitation over both.
