Bain logical reasoning practice question: if-then statements

LogicalHardDeductionIf-then rules

If the server upgrade finishes by Friday, testing starts on Monday. If testing starts on Monday, the launch stays on schedule. The launch did not stay on schedule. Which of these must be true?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C: The server upgrade did not finish by Friday.

Why: The launch slipped, so testing did not start on Monday, and so the upgrade did not finish by Friday (the contrapositive applied twice). The option blaming the upgrade for the delay is tempting, but the premises give no cause for the slip. The last option is impossible, because an upgrade finished by Friday guarantees a Monday start.

What this question practises

Deductive questions give you a few rules and ask what must follow. The trap is concluding more than the rules allow. When a chain of "if A then B" rules ends in something that did not happen, you can work backwards, but you cannot work forwards from a result.

This free question from our Bain question bank is rated hard. It uses two linked rules, which is where most people slip.
